Parent & Child Relationships

Parent/child relationship defines arrangements from child custody to visitation rights and more.

The parent-child relationship is, simply put, the relationship between parents and children. In legal terms, the relationship confers certain rights and privileges, but it also imposes obligations and responsibilities. Harris & McKeown Law Firm practices parent/child relationship law in the best interests of the children.

Parent/child relationship law covers a wide range of topics ranging from child custody arrangements to visitation rights and more. Ultimately, it is in the best interest of a child to maintain a relationship with both parents, and the parent/child relationship laws give children that opportunity. For example:

  • Parents are legally obligated to make decisions about matters affecting their children’s welfare: education, medical care, religion, travel, and more.
  • Parents are also required to take physical responsibility for their children by providing routine daily care and making day-to-day decisions.

The law encourages parents to work together to make all of these decisions, and any judgment passed by the court aims to facilitate a good parent/child relationship between all parties. However, there may be extenuating circumstances in which it is not in the best interest of the child for one of the parents to have these responsibilities, whether temporarily or permanently. This is often due to domestic violence convictions, especially when that violence is against the child, but it may also occur for other reasons when the child’s safety is considered to be at risk.
